St. Croix has several ecological treasures, many of which are being preserved for their value as natural areas and wildlife habitat. Some provide excellent hiking, biking and kayaking opportunities and guided outings are available through a number of organizations and tour operators. The island's salt ponds are rich in resident and migratory birdlife. The mangroves surrounding the ponds are critical nursery habitat for juvenile fish. more
