Salt River National Historic Park and Ecological Preserve, in addition to protecting a significant historical area, is the crown jewel of natural areas on St. Croix. The mangrove "forests" of this estuary were damaged extensively by Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and are being replanted by volunteers of V.I. ReLeaf project of the St. Croix Environmental Association.
