Wildlife watching on St. Croix takes a relaxed mind and a keen eye. In addition to the island birds--covered on their own page—there are several interesting species of mammals, reptiles and amphibians worthy of your inspection. more |

| The very large toad you might see at night after a rain is the crapaud, soaking up stored heat from the road outside your hotel. The little tree lizard, or anole, can be seen inflating his “dewlap” in a display for nearby females as he does a series of pushups. One likely place you might see our large land crab is hanging from a scale at a roadside vendor’s market. Our mammals include the mongoose, white-tail deer and several bat species.
