The most commonly seen mammal along the trail is the mongoose, introduced in 1884 to kill rats that were destroying sugar cane. They run in leaps across the road and seem to have better luck making it to the other side than do stateside squirrels. They may be cute, but they eat ground-nesting birds and lizards, and they destroy turtle eggs.
