St. Croix Heritage Trail Frederiksted is characterized by a smaller scale, wider streets, and charming Victorian architectural detail.  Founded in the 1750's, the town languished until the second half of the 19th century, when it replaced Christiansted as the main port and supported a vibrant community of craftsman, dockworkers, fisherman, small shopkeepers, and merchants.  After being virtually destroyed during a labor insurrection in 1878, Frederiksted was quickly rebuilt by skilled local craftsman influenced by the gingerbread style of the late Victorian period. more
