The majestic great blue heron is locally called “gray gaulin.” It has a wing span of up to seven feet and is 42 to 52 inches tall. The loud harsh croak you hear at one of our salt ponds might very well be the great blue calling out a alarm. They eat crabs, lizards, grasshoppers and mice.
